The Microcurrent Facial: Everything You Need to Know

Get lifted brows and more defined features without needles or scalpels.

The medspa industry is full of claims about "miracle" skincare products and services, but this one lives up to the hype: microcurrent facials. The treatment involves using low-grade electrical current to strengthen, tighten, and lift your facial muscles. In fact, it is often referred to as a "non-invasive facelift."

Since the 1980s, it has been used in medical settings to treat Bell's palsy and muscle paralysis. Microcurrent was then adopted as an anti-aging tool after clinical studies showed it to be effective on atrophied, sagging facial muscles. It has become increasingly popular among at-home skin care tools, as well as top facialists.

The treatment begins like a regular facial.

Like all SkinRX Custom Facials, the Microcurrent Facial begins with cleansing, LED light therapy, exfoliation, serums, and masking. Then a thin film of conductive gel is applied, followed by treatment with a microcurrent machine. This includes the use of two metal wands that the electrical current runs through. Most clients don’t feel any discomfort or pain, just the vibrations as the cool metal wands lift sections of the face, pausing for a few seconds, and repeating before moving to the next section. Essentially, the current is sending a signal to the muscle that this is where it belongs. The facial tissue is being trained, in a sense.

Like all other muscles, those on the face will start to deteriorate over time. The electrical current to 'wake-up' the muscle. The vibrations begin low then gradually increase until you achieve a desired firmness.

The electrical current encourages collagen production, giving treated areas a fuller look as well. Collagen is the main protein the body has to build muscle.

The results are a visibly instant firmer and refreshed look; the skin has a full, plumper appearance, the brows are lifted, increased jawline definition, and more defined cheekbones. In addition the eyes are de-puffed, the forehead appears tighter; an overall refreshed look.

Having a microcurrent facial once a month is sufficient, but some clients opt for the treatment as often as weekly. The results are immediate but not permanent. As with any workout, the more you do it, the better your results will be. We recommend these treatments in a series. The immediate lifting effect and lack of downtime make it an ideal treatment before a big event or red carpet.

People with heart issues, such as a pacemaker, are not advised to get a microcurrent facial because it stimulates the blood. Microcurrent facials are also not recommended for those with severe acne. If it's a pimple here or there, not a problem. If it's aggravated, it is not recommended. There's a lot of inflammation going on, so we don't really want to stimulate that. Pregnant women in their first trimester are also cautioned against doing it.

If you've had fillers or Botox, you should wait two weeks for it to settle before getting a facial to avoid altering the results. After that period, however, cosmetic injections actually work better when you get microcurrent, because there is some evidence that it will make your procedure last longer.
