How I Got Into Skincare: The Story Behind SkinRx

If you had told 14-year-old me that I would one day own a skincare clinic, I probably would have laughed. My first facial experience was so painful that I walked out thinking all aestheticians were evil.

My mom had taken me to a facialist, and what should have been a relaxing introduction to skincare quickly became one of the worst facial experiences of my life. I remember the extractions being painful and thinking, “Why would anyone voluntarily do this?” It went on for twenty more minutes…

Little did I know, that experience would eventually shape the way I care for my own clients and train other estheticians. Today, I have a very specific method for performing gentle extractions because I never want someone to feel the way I did at 14. I believe you can get results without making someone dread their next appointment.

Growing Up Around the Spa Industry

My mom owned a spa, so skincare and beauty were always around me. My GG (Great Grandma) would tell stories of her cosmetology days too. There would be random machines in the back of my Moms spa, and I loved playing with them and figuring out what they did. I didn’t realize it at the time, but those early experiences planted a seed.

Growing up in Florida, I was also a total sun worshiper. I loved being outside and getting tan, and like many teenagers, I wasn’t thinking about what that sun exposure might do to my skin years later.

By my 20s, I started noticing the signs of not taking care of my skin. Sunspots, uneven skin tone, melasma, and the early changes that come with sun damage made me realize that skincare was about more than just looking good. I wanted to understand how skin worked and what I could do to make it healthier.

My Own Struggles With Acne and Skin Health

After having my second daughter, I developed horrible cystic acne. It was painful, frustrating, and honestly overwhelming. There were so many products and treatment options out there, and I couldn’t figure out what was actually best for my skin.

Everyone seemed to have different advice. One person would recommend something, and the next person would tell me the complete opposite. I remember feeling confused and wishing there was someone who could look at my skin, explain what was happening, and help me create a plan that made sense.

That experience gave me a much deeper understanding of what our acne clients go through. When your skin is struggling, you don’t just want another product recommendation. You want someone to listen, educate you, and help you understand your options.

A Scary Wake Up Call

In 2014, I was diagnosed with melanoma on my upper back. It was a scary wake-up call and a moment that changed the way I thought about my skin and my health.

I can’t say exactly what caused my melanoma, but I often think about my years of tanning beds and frying in the Florida sun. I wish I had understood the risks of UV exposure when I was younger.

That experience is a big part of why sun protection and skin health are so personal to me today. I know what it’s like to look back and wish you had taken better care of your skin, and I also know how important it is to move forward with better habits and regular skin checks.

As a melanoma survivor, I encourage everyone to protect their skin and stay current with their dermatologist for professional skin cancer screenings.

Searching for the Perfect Experience

As I got older, I started visiting spas and skincare clinics wherever I traveled or lived. I would try different treatments, experience different approaches, and pay attention to what I loved and what I wished they did differently.

Some places were incredibly relaxing, but I didn’t feel like I was getting the results I wanted. Other places were very clinical and focused on treatments, but the experience felt cold or rushed. I kept looking for that all-in-one place where I could feel cared for, relax, and still know that my skin was being treated with intention.

I couldn’t quite find it.

After years of working in the medical spa industry, I realized I wanted to create the place I had been searching for.

The Beginning of SkinRx

In 2015, I opened SkinRx with a simple idea: skincare should combine relaxation, education, and real results.

I wanted clients to feel comfortable asking questions, whether they were coming in for their very first facial or exploring more advanced treatments. I wanted them to understand what we were doing, why we were doing it, and what they could realistically expect.

Most importantly, I wanted to create an experience where people felt cared for, not just treated.

That philosophy still guides us today. We combine customized facials, advanced skincare, and medical aesthetic treatments with a personal approach. Some clients come to us for acne, sun damage, age spots, or changes in their skin as they get older. Others simply want an hour to relax and take care of themselves. Both are important.

The Heart of SkinRx Today

It’s funny to think that the girl who once thought aestheticians were evil now spends her days helping people feel comfortable in the treatment room.

That first painful facial taught me something I still carry with me: the way someone feels during a treatment matters just as much as the treatment itself. My experience with cystic acne taught me how overwhelming conflicting skincare advice can be. And my melanoma diagnosis taught me that skin health is about so much more than appearance.

Those experiences are woven into the way I care for clients today. Gentle extractions, thoughtful care, education, and taking the time to listen are not small details. They’re part of the experience I always wanted to create.

SkinRx has grown and evolved since 2015, but the heart behind it hasn’t changed. My passion has always been to educate, cultivate confidence, and help people feel good in their own skin.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the team we’ve built. Every single person who works at SkinRx has a genuine passion for helping others. They care about our clients, they care about their craft, and they care about making a difference in someone’s day.

You can teach someone how to perform a treatment or use a piece of equipment, but you can’t teach someone to truly care. That is a gift, and I feel incredibly fortunate to work alongside people who have it.

As a business owner, it’s been so rewarding to watch our team grow, learn, and develop their own passion for this industry. I’m proud to know that I’ve helped cultivate a place where talented people can thrive and where our clients feel that care from the moment they walk through the door.

What started as my dream has become something much bigger than me. It’s a team of people who share the same heart for helping others, and that means everything to me.

Whether you’re new to skincare or you’ve been searching for the right place for years, I hope SkinRx feels like the place you’ve been looking for.

With love,
